A round of golf along North Dakota’s Lewis & Clark Golf Trail is one legendary way to enjoy both spectacular scenery and centuries of history.



The Long X Trading Post

Start your trip at The Long X Trading Post Visitor Center and Pioneer Museum – your destination for information on McKenzie County’s past and present.  Check out North Dakota’s Largest Petrified Tree Stump and pick up brochures on Western North Dakota’s vacation attractions.  

The Pioneer Museum lays a great foundation to any touring in the area. Offering two levels, the Museum presents the pioneering spirit of McKenzie County residents of the past and present. Visit the pioneer parlor and experience all the comforts of home. Check out the Prairie School and the sewing and quilting of the early prairie homestead women and Native American women of McKenzie County.  Learn about the last lynching in North Dakota taking place in 1931.  See a presentation on what it takes to drill for oil in McKenzie County and view the “to scale” Drilling Rig and Work Over Rig on display in the Oil and Gas Exploration exhibit.

Fox Hills Golf & Country Club – Watford City

Established in 1930, Fox Hills Golf & Country Club is a premier 9-hole golf course that uses multiple tee boxes to offer different views and yardages making it a great 18-hole experience.  You will truly enjoy this fun and challenging men’s 6.044 yard par 72 and women’s 5,403 yard par 73 in the heart of the Bakken.  The Clubhouse, open year round, features two state-of-the-art Full Swing Golf Simulators, 13 large HD TVs, and full service menus to accommodate your dining needs.  The course is on the eastern side of Watford City, off of Business Highway 23, and includes lounge, restaurant, pro shop, putting green, practice range and cart rental.  For more information contact the Fox Hills Golf & Country Club at 701-842-2047.

Edgewater Country Club – New Town

New Town lies on the northern side of Lake Sakakawea and is home to Edgewater Country Club, a 9-hole track that measures 6,556 yards for 18-holes of play from the pro tees.  Par is 72 for 18 holes.  The country club offers a snack bar, lounge, pro shop, practice range and cart rentals.  For more information contact the Edgewater Country Club at 701-627-9407.

The Links of North Dakota – Tobacco Gardens

The course located just 28 miles outside of Williston, North Dakota and 16 miles from Ray, North Dakota in the heart of the areas Bakken Oil Formation.  Through a special arrangement, you can access The Links from Tobacco Gardens Resort & Marina.  The resort will boat you across Lake Sakakawea to the north shore – home of The Links.  Contact Tobacco Gardens Resort at 701-842-4199 for departure times.

The nationally recognized layout on the bluffs overlooking Lake Sakakawea gives players of any ability a chance to test all facets of their game. Water doesn’t come into play on this par-72 championship course but 82 sand bunkers will. Wind will almost always factor into your round at The Links. Players have the option of five tee boxes as they set out for 18 holes of links golf on a course with wide open fairways, but punishing native prairie grass rough.
